Her childhood rescuer Richard Darrien returns as danger closes around her, but Rachel’s visions and the loyalty of her companion Noie draw her beyond ordinary political conflict.
The women reach the hidden domain of the Ghost Kings, an isolated people whose priests read the future and worship sacred trees. Haggard joins historical Zulu power struggles to supernatural lost-race fiction, making Rachel both a threatened colonial outsider and a figure through whom competing societies seek divine authority.
