In the reign of Cetshwayo, a Zulu love story is threatened by jealousy, political patronage and the intervention of a ruthless white trader. The courtship of Nanea and Nahoon becomes entangled with rival claims to status and with the king’s power to reward, judge and punish.
The book contrasts individual loyalty with manipulation at the royal court. Its depiction of regimental society, chiefly authority and cross-cultural trade belongs to the final years of the independent Zulu kingdom immediately before the Anglo-Zulu War.
