Dynasty follows the Sekloongs, a wealthy Eurasian trading family in Hong Kong, from the opening of the twentieth century into the 1970s. The empire founded by Sir Jonathan Sekloong passes to descendants divided by marriage, adultery, commercial ambition and competing ideas of national loyalty. Mary Osgood’s marriage to Charles Sekloong places an Englishwoman at the centre of a family whose members rise within Nationalist China, the Communist movement and American diplomacy.
The saga moves through the Boxer Rebellion, the fall of the Qing dynasty, Japanese invasion, civil war, Communist victory and the Cultural Revolution. Sun Yat-sen, Chiang Kai-shek and Mao Zedong enter a narrative in which the family’s private alliances mirror the larger conflict between colonial Hong Kong, Republican China and the People’s Republic. The result is both a multigenerational family drama and a political history of modern China seen from the territory’s commercial elite.
