Historical person
George Henry Thomas
1816–1870
George Henry Thomas was a Virginia-born United States Army general whose defence at Chickamauga and command at Chattanooga made him one of the Union’s principal western commanders.
Thomas remained loyal to the United States when Virginia seceded. He earned the name “Rock of Chickamauga” for holding the Union position after much of the army retreated. He then commanded the Army of the Cumberland, helped break the siege of Chattanooga and later defeated John Bell Hood’s army at Nashville.
