John Marshal

1105–1165

John Marshal was an Anglo-Norman nobleman and royal official whose career unfolded during the Anarchy. He served first King Stephen and later Empress Matilda, held strategic castles and became notorious for hard bargaining and military resilience. During a siege Stephen threatened to hang John’s young son William unless he surrendered; John refused, reportedly saying he could father better sons. William survived and became the famous knight and regent William Marshal.

Elizabeth Chadwick’s A Place Beyond Courage places John Marshal at the centre of a historical novel and reconstructs his marriages, shifting allegiance and frontier warfare. He also appears in fiction about William Marshal’s childhood. Novelists often use the hostage episode to portray him as brutally pragmatic, while the wider civil war explains why loyalty and survival were rarely simple choices.

Ellis Peters’s Brother Cadfael’s Penance is set in late 1145, England remains divided between King Stephen and Empress Matilda, and an attempted peace meeting at Coventry fails to end the conflict.
