Roger fitzOdo, an orphaned Norman with practical skills and few prospects, attaches himself to the mercenary captain Roussel de Bailleul. Their company travels east into Byzantine service, where imperial commanders depend on Frankish cavalry but distrust the ambitions of the men they hire.

Roger’s loyalty brings him close to Roussel and to the captain’s resourceful wife Matilda as campaigns, rebellions and negotiations carry them across Asia Minor.
