In Devon and London, both sisters discover that affection is constrained by money, family pressure and prior commitments. Edward’s secret engagement to Lucy Steele threatens Elinor’s hopes, while Willoughby abandons Marianne for a wealthier marriage. Illness and painful disclosures force them to reconsider first impressions, emotional honesty and the difference between romantic display and dependable conduct.
