Madeleine Grant studies in Paris, marries the French journalist Giles Martin and raises their son there until war begins. Giles remains in France to work with the Resistance while Madeleine takes their child to England, where a devastating attack leaves her believing that she has lost him.

Madeleine accepts wartime intelligence work and returns to occupied France, hoping to find Giles and strike against the German forces. Her mission requires her to move through resistance networks, survive betrayal and discover whether any part of her family can still be saved.
