In 1940, a bombing destroys Josie Banks’s London home, kills her employer and leaves her injured while her controlling husband is away on military service. Evacuated to the country estate of Miss Harcourt, Josie persuades her reluctant host to let her open a small tea shop for the displaced community.

Josie becomes close to Canadian pilot Mike Johnson and begins imagining a life independent of her husband. When Stan returns and a hidden wartime danger emerges near the estate, Josie must protect the people who helped her rebuild and decide which future she is prepared to claim.
