In October 1919, Rutledge is sent to a marsh-bound Norfolk village after a Catholic priest is murdered shortly after hearing a dying man’s confession. The secrecy of the confessional frustrates ordinary police methods, while religious suspicion and an old disappearance divide the community. Rutledge must determine whether the priest died because of what he knew, what others imagined he knew or a grievance hidden beneath the village’s quiet surface.

The novel places post-war anxiety within a landscape shaped by isolation, sectarian memory and rigid social roles. Many residents have lost relatives or returned changed, but their grief is expressed through older conflicts. Rutledge’s sensitivity to concealed trauma helps him interpret the case, even as Hamish’s presence makes solitude increasingly dangerous.
