In March 1920, Rutledge travels to the coastal town of Hampton Regis after a man is nearly beaten to death and the principal suspect takes a woman hostage. The accused insists that he is innocent and demands Rutledge as negotiator, forcing the inspector to examine a triangle of marriage, jealousy and wartime friendship under immediate pressure. Each participant offers a plausible account that reflects desire more clearly than fact.

The novel explores how the war disrupted emotional loyalties and returned men to relationships that had changed in their absence. Public assumptions about masculinity, possession and honour make the hostage situation appear simpler than it is. Rutledge must identify the false reflection before violence fixes it as truth.
