Nigel Tranter (1909–2000) was a Scottish novelist and historian best known for an exceptionally large body of historical fiction centred on Scotland. His writing career began with studies of Scottish castles, fortified houses and architecture, research that helped develop his detailed knowledge of the country’s landscape and political history. He later became a full-time writer, producing fiction, non-fiction and travel writing, but his reputation rests chiefly on more than ninety novels dramatizing Scottish history from the medieval period to the eighteenth century. His first novel focused on a major historical figure was The Queen’s Grace, about Mary, Queen of Scots.

Tranter’s novels cover monarchs, nobles, soldiers and clan leaders including Macbeth, David I, William Wallace, Robert the Bruce, James V, Mary, Queen of Scots, the MacGregors and the House of Stewart. His most celebrated work is The Bruce Trilogy—The Steps to the Empty Throne, The Path of the Hero King and The Price of the King’s Peace—which follows Robert the Bruce’s struggle to secure the Scottish crown and establish an independent kingdom. Other important works include The Wallace, Macbeth the King and his trilogies about James V and the MacGregor clan. Tranter generally placed documented political events at the centre of his narratives, using imagined conversations and personal relationships to connect gaps in the surviving record and make Scotland’s complicated dynastic history accessible as historical fiction.
