Creation

Creation follows Cyrus Spitama, a Persian diplomat and the fictional grandson of Zoroaster, as he travels across the major civilizations of the 6th–5th centuries BCE. Serving under Darius I, he is sent on diplomatic missions that take him through India, where he meets Buddha and Mahavira, and then to China, where he encounters Confucius and Lao Tzu. His journey becomes a comparative study of the world’s emerging philosophies—each offering a different answer to the nature of reality, justice, and the origins of the universe. The novel is framed as Cyrus’s memoir, written late in life as a rebuttal to Herodotus, whom he believes has misrepresented Persia and its role in history.

The second half of the novel brings Cyrus into the orbit of the Greco‑Persian Wars, including the reign of Xerxes I and the political world of Athens, where he meets figures such as Socrates, Anaxagoras, and Pericles. Through these encounters, Vidal uses Cyrus as a witness to the “Axial Age,” a period when many of the world’s foundational religious and philosophical systems were taking shape. The novel blends political intrigue, travel narrative, and philosophical debate, ultimately presenting a panoramic view of ancient civilizations grappling with questions of creation, truth, and power.
