North-West Frontier, 1895. Andrew Baird accompanies a British agent toward Chitral as rumours of Russian involvement intensify and a small garrison comes under siege. He joins Colonel Kelly’s relief force, then follows evidence through the Khyber Pass and the Tirah, where tribal politics and imperial intelligence form a puzzle with no reliable picture.

The novel connects the Chitral expedition with the larger Great Game and the frontier campaigns of the 1890s. Mountain terrain, competing information and local autonomy limit what even experienced officers can control, while the presence of Jack Windrush links Andrew’s choices to an older generation of imperial service.
