Following the Allied landings in Normandy, the 27th Penal Regiment retreats eastwards through France as German positions collapse. Sven and his comrades face British and American troops, Resistance activity and orders that demand continued fighting despite the widening Allied superiority. Their route towards Strasbourg is shadowed by Adolf Hitler’s command that Paris must not be allowed to fall intact.
The novel places a small group of exhausted German soldiers within the liberation of France, contrasting military necessity with the regime’s appetite for destruction. Paris becomes both a strategic objective and a threatened civilian city, while retreat produces confused loyalties, improvised combat and opportunities for commanders to conceal failure. The men’s chief objective is not victory but escape from a war that the Nazi leadership refuses to admit is lost.
