Book
The Pale Criminal
Berlin, 1938. Bernie Gunther is occupied with a blackmail investigation when a series of murders brings him back into police work. Several missing schoolgirls have been found dead, and the regime’s obsession with their Aryan appearance ensures that the case receives attention denied to many other victims.
Reinhard Heydrich pressures Bernie to help hunt the killer. As the investigation moves through Nazi institutions, occult interests and political rivalries, Bernie becomes convinced that the murders cannot be understood as the work of a single isolated criminal. Solving the case means working inside a police state whose leaders are themselves capable of organised violence.
