Berlin, 1934. Bernie Gunther has left the criminal police rather than serve comfortably under the Nazis and is working as house detective at the Adlon Hotel. With the city preparing for the 1936 Olympic Games, two deaths—one involving a businessman, the other a Jewish boxer—lead him towards corruption surrounding the enormous construction programme intended to display the new Germany to foreign visitors.
Bernie's investigation brings him into contact with officials and businessmen already learning how to profit from racial exclusion and political intimidation. The consequences of the case follow him for decades. In 1950s Cuba, amid another world of casinos, money and compromised politics, he encounters unfinished business from Berlin and discovers that people who benefited from the Third Reich have carried their interests into a very different regime.
