Hürrem Sultan

c. 1505–1558

Hürrem entered the Ottoman imperial harem as an enslaved young woman and became the favoured consort of Suleiman I. Their legal marriage broke with established dynastic custom, and her sons became central to the succession politics of the sixteenth-century empire.

Her marriage to Suleiman and sustained influence at court helped redefine the political position of imperial women during the period later called the Sultanate of Women. Hürrem Sultan was born in Ruthenia, traditionally and died in Constantinople.
