In 1944, Johnnie Shaux completes specialist training and reaches Normandy aboard one of the early landing craft, tasked with directing air support for troops fighting their way off the beaches. Eleanor Shaux follows the invasion from Allied headquarters in England, where elaborate plans immediately collide with weather, communication failures and German resistance. Their separate roles place them inside both the operational design of D-Day and the confusion experienced by the men carrying it out.

As the Allies advance towards Germany, the campaign broadens into a series of new dangers. Johnnie joins efforts against the V-1 and V-2 weapons, the airborne gamble of Operation Market Garden ends in costly failure, and the German counter-offensive in the Ardennes delays the expected victory. The appearance of the Me 262 jet fighter adds another threat in the air, forcing Johnnie and Eleanor to confront how quickly tactics, weapons and assumptions can become obsolete.
