This first collection reconstructs seven escapes involving special-forces soldiers whose missions left them trapped behind enemy lines, wounded, captured or separated from their units. The cases show how small patrols survived without normal supply and communication while enemy forces searched for them across occupied territory.
Lewis draws on testimony and family archives to follow the fugitives beyond the initial battle. Disguises, forged identities, bluff and physical endurance repeatedly matter as much as weapons, while civilians and resistance workers risk imprisonment or execution to guide the escapees towards Allied lines. The book has also circulated under the title Churchill’s Great Escapes.
