The Champion
Alexander de Montroi escapes abuse in a monastery and joins his half-brother Hervi on the tournament circuit. Training as a squire and jouster gives him a new identity, and he falls in love with Monday, a young woman whose pregnancy and sudden departure leave both of them vulnerable.
Monday finds work at court and becomes King John’s mistress, while Alexander returns as an experienced professional knight. Their reunion is complicated by royal attention and by Monday’s powerful grandfather, who views her marriage as a political instrument. The novel combines tournament adventure with a struggle for autonomy, family and social legitimacy.
