John le Carré

John le Carré was the pen name of David John Moore Cornwell, an English novelist born in Poole in 1931. After studying at the universities of Bern and Oxford and briefly teaching at Eton, he worked for the British intelligence services MI5 and MI6. He published his first novel, Call for the Dead, in 1961 while still working in intelligence, but achieved international success with The Spy Who Came in from the Cold. His experience within the secret service gave his fiction a convincing understanding of surveillance, bureaucracy, divided loyalties and the personal pressures placed on intelligence officers.

Le Carré transformed the espionage novel by replacing glamorous adventure with moral uncertainty, institutional rivalry and psychological manipulation. His recurring intelligence officer George Smiley appears in novels including Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Honourable Schoolboy and Smiley’s People, which examine betrayal and the conflict between British and Soviet intelligence during the Cold War. Later books such as The Little Drummer Girl, The Night Manager, The Constant Gardener and A Most Wanted Man addressed terrorism, the arms trade, corporate power and the changing international order after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Le Carré died in 2020, leaving a body of work that established the modern literary spy novel as a serious examination of politics, loyalty and personal conscience.
