Dutch Golden Age

1588–1672 CE

The Dutch Golden Age followed the Dutch Revolt and brought the Dutch Republic into a leading position in trade, finance, shipping and art. Amsterdam became a major commercial centre, while Dutch companies operated in Asia, Africa and the Americas. The period combined republican politics, religious pluralism and aggressive maritime competition.

It mattered because it shows how commerce, empire and culture could reinforce one another. Paintings, maps, ships, warehouses and colonial ventures belonged to the same world. Fiction can follow merchants, sailors, painters, printers, spies, Jewish refugees, company officials and families enriched or ruined by trade.
