On the eve of his execution at Smithfield in 1305, William Wallace receives a Scottish priest who has come to hear his final confession. The meeting frames a return to Wallace’s youth, his education and the violence that draws him into resistance as Edward I exploits Scotland’s succession crisis and extends English power across the kingdom.

Told through the recollections of Wallace’s cousin and companion, the novel follows the growth of a local outlaw into a military leader and Guardian of Scotland. It covers the alliances, losses and battlefield decisions behind his campaign, including the victory at Stirling Bridge, while distinguishing the man from the heroic legend created after his death.

Wallace’s later legend can obscure how improvised the early resistance was. Local feuds, noble rivalries and uncertainty over the Scottish crown meant that opposition to Edward I was never automatically unified. The novel’s confessional structure allows the adult Wallace to reconsider decisions later celebrated as patriotic acts, separating the political complexity of his campaign from the cleaner national myth created afterward.
