The Viking world, tenth century. After Norse power is driven from Dublin, Óttar and Ragnall are caught in the resulting diaspora. Their fortunes carry them through the trading and military networks of Europe and onward towards the eastern routes used by Scandinavian adventurers seeking wealth, service and political backing.

Neither man abandons the ambition of returning north to claim influence in Jorvik and Dublin.
