William Montagu, 2nd Earl of Salisbury

1328–1397

William was the son and heir of William Montagu, 1st Earl of Salisbury, and inherited the earldom in 1344. Joan of Kent was married to him while Thomas Holland, her earlier husband, was abroad. The papacy later ruled that Joan's first marriage remained valid, and the Montagu marriage was annulled.

Montagu subsequently pursued a long military and political career under Edward III and Richard II, serving in France and holding important royal offices. Fiction about Joan's marriage dispute often casts him as a rival, but the surviving evidence does not establish every act of coercion or personal motive attributed to him.
