Thomas Holland, 1st Earl of Kent

Thomas Holland was an English soldier and nobleman who rose to prominence in the early stages of the Hundred Years’ War. He fought in Edward III’s campaigns in France and was among the knights associated with the victories of Crécy and the siege of Calais.

Holland secretly married Joan of Kent, whose later marriage to another nobleman produced a prolonged dispute before the papacy recognised Holland’s prior marriage. He was created Earl of Kent in 1360 but died later that year, leaving children whose descendants remained important in Plantagenet politics.

In Colin Falconer’s A Vain and Indecent Woman, Joan of Kent has secretly married the soldier Thomas Holland, but while he is abroad her royal family compels her into a second union with William Montagu.
