Otho Belleme’s story continues in North Africa, where service with the French Foreign Legion brings him into a harsher phase of colonial warfare. Desert marches, threatened outposts and divided personal loyalties force him to act without certainty that courage will repair the consequences of his past. The possibility of love and reconciliation remains, but neither can be secured by a single heroic gesture.

The sequel deepens the moral argument of Soldiers of Misfortune. ‘Valiant dust’ suggests both the courage of ordinary soldiers and the fragility of the reputations for which they suffer.
