Book
The Unfinished Work
First published 2026
Abraham Lincoln enters the presidency as secession becomes civil war and the survival of the United States depends on decisions made under relentless political and personal pressure. The novel follows Lincoln from the election of 1860 through the crises of military command, emancipation and the struggle to sustain a divided Northern coalition.
The story also uses the viewpoints of Mary Todd Lincoln, Secretary of State William H. Seward and General George B. McClellan. Their competing loyalties and judgements reveal the government behind the familiar public image of Lincoln, while battlefield defeat, grief and constitutional conflict test what preserving the Union will require.
