The Fourth Anglo-Mysore War provides the larger framework, culminating in the campaign against Seringapatam. Travel, intelligence and military operations bring the protagonist close to Tipu’s resistance and to the practical difficulties of campaigning in southern India. The novel combines adventure with the imperial conflict that ends Mysore’s ability to challenge British expansion on the same scale.
