England, 1942. German refugee Lilli Bergen wants to contribute directly to the Allied war effort and is recruited by the Political Warfare Executive. Her work as a singer becomes part of a clandestine broadcasting operation designed to sound convincingly German while spreading disruptive information and black propaganda to listeners inside the Reich.
The arrival of Bren Murphy, a man Lilli associates with her father’s arrest, makes the operation personally dangerous as well as secret. Inspired by the British use of the powerful Aspidistra transmitter and the propaganda work associated with Sefton Delmer, the novel explores a form of warfare in which credibility, rumour and carefully manufactured deception are weapons.
