When her father dies and the inheritance is tied to Zachary, Elspet follows him to Spain rather than surrender the future she believed was hers.
Her search leads to Seville, where questions of commerce and family become entangled with swordsmanship, religion and the persecution and expulsion of the Moriscos. The novel uses Elspet’s journey from England to Spain to explore inheritance in more than a financial sense: who may belong, who controls a family’s future and what happens when law and identity are turned against a community.
