Norway, 1942. Schoolteacher Astrid Dahl refuses to impose Nazi ideology on her pupils and becomes involved in the teachers’ resistance against the occupation regime. Arrest and the threat of punishment force her into hiding. Her boyfriend Jørgen Nystrøm, already connected to the Norwegian resistance, escapes across the North Sea and joins the Shetland Bus network.
The clandestine boats carrying agents, arms and intelligence between Shetland and Norway offer Jørgen a way back when Astrid is in danger, but the sea route is exposed to weather, patrols and betrayal. The novel combines two real strands of Norwegian resistance—the teachers’ campaign and the Shetland Bus—to create a story about civil disobedience, covert warfare and personal loyalty under occupation.
