Past Encounters
In 1939, Rhoda and Peter are separated when Peter joins the armed forces and is later captured in France. Years of uncertainty transform both of them. While Peter endures captivity and the final forced movement of prisoners as Germany collapses, Rhoda encounters a different wartime world at home when a film crew arrives to shoot scenes for David Lean’s Brief Encounter.
When Peter returns, reunion does not restore the lives they had before the war. Each has secrets bound up with the ways they survived separation. Moving between wartime captivity and the English home front, the novel examines the long emotional aftermath of conflict and the difficulty of rebuilding intimacy after experiences that neither partner can easily explain.
