The Night Watch

by Sarah Waters

3.9(2,490)

The Night Watch follows four people in London whose lives have been marked by secrecy, wartime service, imprisonment and love. Told in reverse chronology, it moves from the muted aftermath of 1947 back into the danger and intensity of the Blitz. The structure gradually reveals how relationships, injuries and choices made during the war shaped the characters’ post-war lives.

Moving backwards changes the meaning of each revelation. The emotionally guarded people of 1947 are gradually returned to moments when their later scars, relationships and silences were formed. Air raids, ambulance work, imprisonment and forbidden love appear not as distant background but as experiences that explain why post-war survival can feel quieter without necessarily being easier.
