Dr Faraday is called to Hundreds Hall, the decaying Warwickshire home of the Ayres family, in the years after the Second World War. The house and its owners are caught between inherited status and post-war decline, while unexplained events begin to unsettle the family’s fragile routines. The novel follows Faraday’s growing involvement with the Ayreses as class tension, psychological strain and possible haunting gather around the house.

Hundreds Hall is deteriorating at the same moment that the social assumptions sustaining the Ayres family are losing force. Faraday’s fascination with the house is therefore inseparable from class aspiration, nostalgia and his own uncertain position between village life and the old gentry.

The unexplained events can be read as supernatural disturbance, psychological breakdown or an expression of social decay. The novel deliberately keeps those possibilities in tension, using a country house after 1945 to explore how people respond when inherited status, property and identity no longer guarantee a future.
