The family story begun in Deep in the Heart and The Yellow Rose reaches its conclusion as the younger generation confronts captivity, political upheaval and the demands of building a future in Texas. Personal loyalties are tested by the continuing instability of the frontier.

The novel combines romance and adventure with the legacy of Texan independence, conflict with Mexico and violence involving Comanche communities. Christian perseverance shapes the characters’ choices, while the central family remains fictional.
