In the early 1840s, the young Augustus McCrae and Woodrow Call join the Texas Rangers before either man has acquired the skill or reputation associated with his later life. Their first service exposes them to Comanche warfare and to Buffalo Hump, whose attacks reveal how little the new recruits understand about the plains.

The pair then join Caleb Cobb’s attempt to carry Texan authority towards Santa Fe. Poor leadership, hunger, capture and a forced march through New Mexico and northern Mexico turn an expansionist adventure into a struggle for survival that establishes the friendship at the centre of the quartet.
