The Cavalier

Set in England during the First Civil War of the 1640s, The Cavalier follows Royalist experience through a country divided between king and Parliament. James uses military service, family allegiance and romance to show how civil war reaches beyond armies into estates, towns and households. A character may be judged by the cause attached to his name before his personal motives are understood, making trust as important as courage.
The war destroyed the assumption that political disagreement could remain contained within Parliament or court. Garrisons, sieges, requisitioning and local rivalries brought national conflict into everyday life, while defeat could mean exile, confiscation or imprisonment as well as battlefield loss. James’s later treatment of the period emphasises those consequences. The Cavalier ideal remains attractive, but the novel also shows the cost of tying personal identity to a royal cause whose military position steadily deteriorates.
