Amuba, a young prince defeated in war, is carried into Egypt and forced to adapt to life among the people who conquered him. He becomes closely connected with an Egyptian household and learns the customs, beliefs and social order of New Kingdom Egypt while retaining memories of the world he has lost.
A catastrophe involving a sacred cat turns religious reverence into immediate danger and forces the young companions to flee. Their escape carries the adventure through temples, cities and the political landscape of ancient Egypt, where offences against sacred tradition can have consequences as serious as crimes against the state. The novel uses captivity and friendship to introduce Egyptian religion, hierarchy and everyday life through the eyes of an outsider.
