The Story of the Crusades, 1097–1291

by Alfred Duggan

First published 1963

4.0(1)

The Story of the Crusades follows the western expeditions to the eastern Mediterranean from the capture of Jerusalem through the final loss of Acre. Duggan explains how armed pilgrimage produced the crusader states and how those settlements depended on fortifications, maritime supply, diplomacy and a continuing flow of soldiers from Europe.

The account moves through the major crusades, dynastic disputes and Muslim counteroffensives that shaped two centuries of conflict. It gives particular attention to military organisation and to the changing quality of leadership on both sides, placing famous figures such as Richard I and Saladin within the longer rise and collapse of Latin rule in the Holy Land.
