In the summer of 1947, war widow Kate Herrick returns to Rose Cottage, the Northumberland home where she was raised by her grandmother. She expects only to collect family papers before the property is sold, but the documents have disappeared and neighbours report unexplained visitors moving around the cottage at night.
The search forces Kate to reconsider the stories she was told about her parents and her place in the village. Less violent than Stewart’s earlier thrillers, the novel uses the shortages, separations and social readjustments of post-war Britain to frame a mystery about identity, memory and the possibility of beginning again.
