Nicola Ferris arrives early for a holiday in Crete and walks into the hills before joining her cousin. There she finds a wounded Englishman guarded by his Greek companion and learns that another man has disappeared after witnessing violence connected with a remote coastal hotel.
Unable to abandon them, Nicola moves between mountain hiding places and the apparently respectable tourist establishment below. The contrast between traditional village life and a growing visitor economy gives Stewart a landscape in which murder, theft and romance can remain hidden in plain sight.
