Vanessa March believes her husband Lewis is working in Stockholm until a newsreel shows him at the scene of a circus fire in Austria with another woman. Asked to escort a friend’s teenage son to Vienna, she uses the journey to investigate, only to discover that Lewis’s secrecy is connected to a dangerous inquiry rather than a simple affair.
A travelling circus, stolen goods and the unexplained survival of a trained Lipizzaner draw Vanessa into an international smuggling case. Stewart combines marital tension and pursuit with the post-war recovery of Austrian equestrian culture, including a fictional appearance by Spanish Riding School director Alois Podhajsky.
