Horatio Nelson enters the Royal Navy as a twelve-year-old midshipman and learns command through hardship, illness and service during the American Revolutionary War. In parallel, Emma Lyon escapes domestic service and begins using beauty, performance and patronage to rise through Georgian society.
The novel follows their separate formative years as Nelson gains early commands and Emma becomes a courtesan and artist’s model. Their ambitions develop in different worlds that will eventually meet through Naples, diplomacy and war.
