In the spring of 455, several months after the events of Britannia World’s End, Ambrosius Aurelianus leads his battered company west from its winter refuge at Villa Magna. He hopes the country around Durnovaria will offer safety and perhaps a connection to his dead mother’s British kin, but every mile takes the refugees farther from the habits and certainties of the Roman world.
Near Vindocladia they shelter in an abandoned settlement, unaware that Vortigern has placed a rich price on Ambrosius’s capture. Local enemies and opportunists begin to close in, turning what should have been a short stage of the journey into another fight for survival. The novella bridges the second and third novels as Ambrosius searches for a permanent foothold in post-Roman Britain.
