Land of Fire

by Derek Birks Book 3 in the The Last of the Romans series.

By late spring 455, Ambrosius Aurelianus has led his followers into south-west Britannia in search of his mother’s people. Exhausted by the winter struggle with Vortigern, the company occupies a ruined Roman fort near Vindocladia and finds a possible ally in Lurotriga, widowed queen of the Durotriges. The alliance offers security but also creates new tensions within Ambrosius’s mixed band of Britons, Romans and Saxons.

Vortigern is already building a coalition to destroy him, and the Roman fort will not withstand a determined attack without repairs and reinforcements. Ambrosius must negotiate with suspicious neighbouring rulers while confronting revelations about his own family and place in Britain. The novel brings the trilogy’s conflict between Roman inheritance, British power and Saxon expansion towards a final reckoning.
