The Last of the Romans

In the middle of the fifth century, the western Roman Empire is breaking apart and the old imperial order can no longer protect the people who once depended upon it. The series follows Ambrosius Aurelianus, a Roman military commander forced out of the imperial world and into the dangerous political landscape of post-Roman Britain, accompanied by a small company of soldiers, refugees and uneasy allies.

Across Italy, Gaul and Britain, Ambrosius must adapt Roman habits of command to a country fractured among British rulers, Saxon settlers and competing warlords. Birks uses the uncertain historical figure of Ambrosius and the traditions surrounding Vortigern to explore the violent transition between Roman Britain and the early medieval kingdoms that followed.
