Setep-ta, a royal scribe, records the struggle between the Egyptian court and the enslaved Israelites as Prince Seti becomes involved with the Israelite woman Merapi. Court intrigue and religious conflict intensify through the plagues and the demand that Moses’s people be allowed to leave Egypt.
Haggard treats the Exodus as historical romance, placing biblical tradition within an imagined New Kingdom administration. Egyptian succession, temple power, forced labour and competing conceptions of divine authority shape the personal story.
