Law of the Land
This collection brings together sixteen stories of the American West, ranging across ranches, small towns and open country where law is often personal and justice uncertain. The characters include cowboys, ranchers, gunmen and ordinary people forced to decide how far they will go when property, family or reputation is threatened.
Rather than following one continuing hero, the stories examine different kinds of frontier conflict: disputes over land and livestock, encounters between strangers and the moral choices hidden behind familiar western legends. The collection includes “Biscuits for a Bandit” and shows Elmer Kelton’s interest in the working lives and practical compromises that sit behind the mythology of the Old West.
